In Our Country, People Get Touchy About Politics And History: Madhur Bhandarkar

Madhur Bhandarkar came in support of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Padmavati’, which has been in controversy for quite some time now, the movie was earlier supposed to release on 1st December but then the makers had postponed the release date because of the political pressure. The movie tells the story of Rani Padmini, which is played by Deepika Padukone. Now, Madhur Bhandarkar has already faced this problem earlier this year at the time of the release of his directorial ‘Indu Sarkar’, which was based on the 1975 emergency.  “I understand the situation of a filmmaker. I’ve condemned the kind of language being used by certain people. But ultimately, the film should be passed by the Censor. Also, it’s entirely up to Bhansali whether he wants to show the film to the community, who feel their sentiments have been hurt. People get touchy about politics and history, in our country”, he said. Bhandarkar also received similar threats by a certain community at the time of the release of ‘Indu Sarkar’, the movie was expected to be something good and it was to a certain extent but the controversy hyped the movie and expectations from the movie got high and it didn’t live up to the hype. Bhandarkar also said that one and a half months ago, he too had been in trouble by the political parties to change the dialogues and the principal character’s name from his movie ‘Indu Sarkar’. He also stated that ‘Padmavati’ should have a smooth release because Sanjay Leela Bhansali makes good cinema and it is a big budget film.
