Omung Kumar’s ‘The Good Maharaja’ Runs Into Legal Trouble

A few months back we revealed to you that director Omung Kumar has announced his next project with Sanjay Dutt, ‘The Good Maharaja’ which will be based on the life of late Maharaja of Jamnagar, Jam Sahib Digvijaysinghji Ranjitsinhji for his noble deed of rescuing Polish refugees by providing shelter to them in the palace. And now, the news has come that the heirs of the Maharaja, Hershad Kumari and Himanshu Kumari have raised an objection and sent a legal notice to the makers of the movie. The lawyer of the Kumaris claimed that the makers should have taken permission of the family before starting or even announcing the project. In the notice, they have mentioned that they got aware of the news through social and print media and they do not want to distort any facts and tarnish the image of their father. While when the producer of movie ‘The Good Maharaja’ Sandeep Singh was asked to comment upon the same, he said that they did not consider taking permission as Maharaja Digvijaysinghji’s story is in the public domain. Poland continues to celebrate a day in honour of the great king hence they thought of adapting it for a movie. The filmmaker also alleged that people today are publicity hungry and often take on filmmakers especially when they adapt real-life stories on the big screen. When asked if the movie will be shelved now or not, Singh added that we are already seeking permissions in Poland, and if there will be a need they will even take the permission from his family. And the movie with Sanjay Dutt in the lead will happen.
