Vyjayanthimala Says That Modern Indian Cinema Lacks Realism

Veteran actress Vyjayanthimala, who has given some memorable films in the 60s like ‘New Delhi’, ‘Naya Daur’, ‘Aasha, Sangam’, ‘Sadhna’, ‘Madhumathi’ and ‘Ganga Jamuna’, has a very strong opinion on today’s Indian Cinema; she said that the modern Indian Cinema lacks realism in every form. Now, that’s a very strong statement. Vyjayanthimala was a critically acclaimed actor, dancer, and singer and a statement like this, coming out from her does matter. The actress has done it all, there was a time when the directors were dying to sign her in their films, she was a diva of her time and it would be not wrong if we say that she was among the first female actresses who made it big on the big screen. Her career has gone in a lot of different direction; she has seen a lot of things in her career. Well, the actress feels that cinema in India should change; she said that everything is improving in quality so why not films. “There was so much realism in our time and that is missing in today’s films, we were not playing any gimmicks, we were acting, back then, I don’t know what happened, but it should change”, she said. Vajayanthimala retired from acting in the late 1960s after conquering for nearly two decades. She was just 13 years old when her first Tamil film ‘Vazhkai’ was released, since then she did movies in Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, and Bengali, she was one of the major parts of that era and without her contribution things would have been different today. Now, her opinion is valid, Indian Cinema does need to change but it is changing slowly, and 2017 is a witness of that, this year big films like ‘Tubelight’ and ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ flopped at the Box Office but good content driven films like ‘Newton’ and ‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’ has done great.
